A CITY MEETING in UIA 2005 ISTANBUL CONGRESS

The Building Information Centre is providing the medium for an outstanding "city meeting" that will bring together governors, architects, sociologists, NGOs and the public on a most urgent and central urban issue. The meeting will take place as part of the UIA 2005 Istanbul Congress, and hence will also act as a ground of informative and international exchange on Istanbul's housing tradition, along with its contemporary, social aspects. Tarlabaşı is characterised with its high quality housing from the 19th century and its characteristic Eastern Mediterranean urban texture, which has undergone a social change, mainly due to population movements.

Prof. Alper Ünlü from Istanbul Technical University and his project team will be presenting their work on the "Rehabilitation of Slum Districts of Beyoğlu," which was commissioned by the Greater Municipality of Istanbul, Urban Atelier and ran by Istanbul Technical University Environment and Urbanism Project and Research Centre. The presentation will include crime and social analysis of the region, and the role of the physical environment on this social formation. The team will also be explaining the proposed rehabilitation methods and projects. After this initial presentation, the participants will be taken around and introduced to the area, after which an enriching discussion will be held, with contributions from academic, administrative and NGO bodies.

Along with the project owner, Greater Municipality of Istanbul, Urban Atelier, all actors and interested institutions and persons are invited to the meeting, including Governors, Local Municipality of Beyoğlu, universities, representatives from Minority Foundations, French Institute of Anatolian Studies, Consulate General of Greece in Istanbul, NGOs, including Galata Organization, Human Settlements Association, Cihangir Improvement Organization, Beyoğlu Artisans Organization, Police Departments, Real Estate Investors, Urban Land Institute and most importantly public representatives.

The reflections and results of the meeting will be made public by www.yapi.com.tr.
